Kindergarten

I am back in the nursery business after a small clutch of eggs was left on the lamp collar last week. Somehow, they survived the eager attentions of my visiting grand-daughter and have now hatched into tiny hawk moth caterpillars - I would guess Poplar Hawks as that is the only one visiting at the moment, but no doubt things will become clearer.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. PS I meant to ask in this post about the significance of the horn on hawk moth caterpillars. I had vaguely assumed that it was intimidatory to predators but its size even on these newly-hatched catties makes me wonder if it has some other significance, eg reproductive. I have done an initial Google but would be grateful to be pointed in the direction of any enlightening info. Or maybe it is not yet understood, like so many things!
