Another Gypsy and one for checking

I was surprised to get another Gypsy moth in last night's catch having caught one last year which was possibly a first for Oxfordshire.

I would appreciate some advice on this micro - about 9mm in length. I thought it might be
Cochylimorpha straminea?

Andy Newbold, Sibford Ferris, Oxon.

  1. Hi Andy, yes that is Cochylimorpha straminea. Gypsy Moth is popping up all over the place so I suspect many of us will be getting it as a garden regular in a few years time. The populations around/within our area (London, Aylesbury and Swindon spring to mind) seem to be spreading out and DEFRA no longer appear all that interested. I wonder how long it will take them to admit defeat on Oak Processionary which is following on behind.

    1. Thank you. I understand that there has not been a Warwickshire Gypsy Moth record since 1896 and I am less than a mile from the border so perhaps it will find its way there.
