More ID help needed

Could I just check that the first one is a Poplar Grey and would welcome any help with the two pugs and the micro.

  1. Hi Andy, I'd guess the top one is actually Knot Grass but someone else may like to comment. For me, Poplar Grey needs that "fuzzy white area" below the kidney mark which your moth doesn't show. The overall shape differs between the two species but you can't see that very well from your photo. They can be a confusing pair sometimes. The micro is Syndemis musculana and I'll hazard a guess that the two Pugs are Freyer's and Common.

  2. Yes, the top one is Poplar Grey. It lacks the distinct white spot near the dorsum and the markings are rather grainy. Also the oval is white, which would be unusual in Knot-grass. Look at the hindwing - white (male) or greyish-white/grey (female) in Poplar Grey, greyish-brown in Knot-grass. I'm sure I rmember reading all this somewhere ...

As for the first pug, unless this photo is horribly distorted, the narrow forewing with acutely angled cross-lines make this Angle-barred Pug. I agree with Dave on the other two.

  3. Thank you both for your help. It was the lack of the "fuzzy white area" that made me check the Poplar Grey. However looking at other photos taken from a better angle confirm the overall shape of the moth as being like the Poplar Grey. The Pug was definitely like the image in shape.
