Plutella porrectella?

Is this Plutella porrectella? Seems to have the banded antennae mentioned on some sites but overall it looks more like P. xylostella

Mark Griffiths, Garsington, Oxford

  1. Hi Mark, I'm afraid that's still our old friend xylostella. They are quite variable, both in markings and in size (over the past week I've had some tiny ones as well as very large examples). Porrectella looks quite different (that less-than-helpful phrase "you'll know it when you see it" springs to my mind!) and the Rhigognostis species, which do look a bit like xylostella, simply aren't found around here.

  2. Take a look at Andy N's posting just before yours. You'll see the beast in question.

  3. Try growing some sweet rocket, I find quite a few porectella flying around this plant in my garden
