Large caterpillar

I found this larva in my front garden today, resting on the leaf of an artichoke plant. It was fairly large, in that it measured about 50mm (2 inches) in length. I wondered if anybody could suggest what it might be?

  1. Don't know! I suppose the most likely caterpillar of that size to be found now is Angle Shades, which is certainly a possibility although the markings on your specimen look a bit odd. Why don't you try to rear it through?

  2. Steve, if you are on Facebook there is a group called Caterpillars UK and Europe, worth asking on there.
