Another square?

Going through many variations of Square spot I came to this one. FW20mm. Is this another?.Any help welcomed. Sorry about the pot but as soon as it felt fresh air it was off!.

  1. Of course Square Spot is another moth entirely and not related to Square-spot Rustic. It looks like a Lesser Yellow Underwing.

  2. Hello Steve, I presume you failed to see the bright yellow hind-wings as it escaped?! That's a Lesser Yellow Underwing.

Incidentally, and meant for a wider audience (particularly those who have come to moths fairly recently via birds where abbreviations are rife), the Victorians unfortunately seem to have employed only a limited pool of words when giving moths vernacular names so we all need to take care to get them right in order to avoid any possible confusion. I presume that Square-spot Rustic is meant here, but there is also a moth called the Square Spot...

  3. Thanks both, I'll try and be a little more exact with my naming,it was a little lazy. I missed the yellow wings as it flew unfortunately. Thanks.
