A Blog for moth recorders in Bucks, Berks and Oxon
Of course Square Spot is another moth entirely and not related to Square-spot Rustic. It looks like a Lesser Yellow Underwing.
Hello Steve, I presume you failed to see the bright yellow hind-wings as it escaped?! That's a Lesser Yellow Underwing.Incidentally, and meant for a wider audience (particularly those who have come to moths fairly recently via birds where abbreviations are rife), the Victorians unfortunately seem to have employed only a limited pool of words when giving moths vernacular names so we all need to take care to get them right in order to avoid any possible confusion. I presume that Square-spot Rustic is meant here, but there is also a moth called the Square Spot...
Thanks both, I'll try and be a little more exact with my naming,it was a little lazy. I missed the yellow wings as it flew unfortunately. Thanks.
