A Blog for moth recorders in Bucks, Berks and Oxon
Hi Mark, those two 'eyes' staring back at you, combined with the wishy-washy lighter grey area beyond, should give the game away on this one - Poplar Grey. The illustrations in the WTL field guide don't really do the 'eye' feature justice. Knot Grass and Coronet are a bit similar but generally smaller. This is a common moth that you'll soon get used to, I'm sure.
great thanks Dave, another new one for me!
If you are clever, you can hold the moth gently and prise open the forewings to reveal the hindwings. Knotgrass they are a dull blackish-smoky colour whereas Poplar Grey they are white with dark veining.
